An amusing fish who spends all day poking its head out of its burrow only to retreat backwards like lightening if it senses danger. Must have a deep substrate in order to build its burrow, without one it likely will die from stress. Can live alone but do very well in groups. Just don't over crowd them. As with all Jawfish, a peaceful tank is usually essential for the chance of survival. |

The Yellowhead Jawfish (Opistognathus aurifrons) is sometimes called a Pearly Jawfish. It belongs to the family named Opistognathidae. Typically reaching a max size of about 4.0 inches in length, the Yellowhead Jawfish is generally passive in nature and moderately hardy in stamina. It's more active during the daytime and less at night, and will hang out or do best in the substrate. According to FishDB current data, captive breeding success is unreported and there are no external signs of sexual differences. Opistognathus aurifrons should not be housed in a tank less than 20 gallons in size. Tank parameters should be maintained with ph level between 8.1 - 8.3, temperature between 77 - 79 degrees fahrenheit, and a salinity between 1.020 - 1.023. Some of the environmental concerns that you should strive to replicate in your home aquaria to promote succesful acclimation include plenty of hiding places, a mixed substrate, a deep substrate, keep 3 or more, and a peaceful environment.

I can not attest for all Pearly Jawfish, but mine is a comical people watcher. He's moved tanks 3 times in the past 14 months. Currently he's in my 120g reef with much larger fish. He grew out of his shyness and does not let any of his tankmates keep him from doing whatever he wants. I do think he is an exception in this breed, but with time, they can and do become bold.
