The Volitans Lionfish is a beautiful and magestic fish. Lionfish tend to be a catalyst for many to get into the saltwater hobby because of there unique appearance. However they should not be taken lightly because of their peaceful demeanor. They can grow quite large and will eat anything they can fit in their mouths. Not to mention they can deliver a venomous sting if not careful. |

The Volitans Lionfish (Pterois volitans) is sometimes called a Common Lionfish, a Turkeyfish, a Red Firefish, a Butterfly Cod, or a Devilfish. It belongs to the family named Scorpaenidae. Typically reaching a max size of about 15.0 inches in length, the Volitans Lionfish is generally passive in nature and moderately hardy in stamina. It's more active during the daytime and less at night, and will hang out across the entire tank. According to FishDB current data, captive breeding success is unreported and there are no external signs of sexual differences. Pterois volitans should not be housed in a tank less than 55 gallons in size. Tank parameters should be maintained with ph level between 8.1 - 8.3, temperature between 77 - 79 degrees fahrenheit, and a salinity between 1.020 - 1.023.

The Volitans Lionfish is the most common lionfish sold in the aquarium trade. Because of the fact, the Volitans Lionfish is commonly refered to as the "Common Lionfish". Once you have housed one of the beauties, you will understand why they are so appreciated. Even though they have been appreciated, they have, at times, been taken for granted. Volitans Lionfish, as with all lionfish, pack a nasty sting in the tips of its fins. If the sting is not too severe, running the infected area under hot water for several minutes can help...but watch out...sometimes that sting can last days!
