The Thornback Cowfish is less reported to exude poisons as easily as other boxfish. Take care not to house with very aggressive tankmates and this specimen has a better chance to acclimate that other boxfish as well. |

The Thornback Cowfish (Lactoria fornasini) is sometimes called a Bluelined Cowfish or a Thornback Boxfish. It belongs to the family named Ostraciidae. Typically reaching a max size of about 5.8 inches in length, the Thornback Cowfish is semi-aggressive in nature and risky in stamina. It's more active during the daytime and less at night, and will hang out or do best in the middle tank area. According to FishDB current data, captive breeding success is unlikely and there are no external signs of sexual differences. Lactoria fornasini should not be housed in a tank less than 55 gallons in size. Tank parameters should be maintained with ph level between 8.1 - 8.3, temperature between 77 - 79 degrees fahrenheit, and a salinity between 1.020 - 1.023. Some of the environmental concerns that you should strive to replicate in your home aquaria to promote succesful acclimation include extra swimming area, plenty of hiding places, a stable cave/sheltering ledge, and a peaceful environment.
