A school of these cats will put on an entertaining display for the aquarist. However there is a downfall. They grow up and become aggresive towards smaller fish and crustaceans. Also, they loose their color as they grow becoming dull and less attractive. Use extreme caution when handling them. They pack an excruciating, venomous sting comparable to a Lionfish. Best kept in groups. |

The Striped Eel Catfish (Plotosus lineatus) is sometimes called a Coral Catfish. It belongs to the family named Plotosidae. Typically reaching a max size of about 12.0 inches in length, the Striped Eel Catfish is generally passive in nature and moderately hardy in stamina. It's more active during the daytime and less at night, and will hang out across the entire tank. According to FishDB current data, captive breeding success is unreported and there are no external signs of sexual differences. Plotosus lineatus should not be housed in a tank less than 75 gallons in size. Tank parameters should be maintained with ph level between 8.1 - 8.3, temperature between 77 - 79 degrees fahrenheit, and a salinity between 1.020 - 1.023. Some of the environmental concerns that you should strive to replicate in your home aquaria to promote succesful acclimation include extra swimming area, plenty of hiding places, keep 3 or more, and a strong water current.
