A favorite for it's comical appearance, puffers tend to act more like a dog than a fish, by following the aquarist around the tank and "begging" for food.Don't provoke the puffer to "puff" up, this is extremely stressful and could even prove to be fatal for it. It is recommended to not catch with a net, since its spines may become caught in the webbing and possibly damaging the fish. |

The Spiny Puffer (Diodon holocanthus) is sometimes called a Porcupinefish or a Ballonfish. It belongs to the family named Tetraodontidae. Typically reaching a max size of about 12.0 inches in length, the Spiny Puffer is semi-aggressive in nature and moderately hardy in stamina. It's more active during the evening hours or at night and less so during the day, and will hang out across the entire tank. According to FishDB current data, captive breeding success is unreported and there are no external signs of sexual differences. Diodon holocanthus should not be housed in a tank less than 75 gallons in size. Tank parameters should be maintained with ph level between 8.1 - 8.3, temperature between 77 - 79 degrees fahrenheit, and a salinity between 1.020 - 1.023. Some of the environmental concerns that you should strive to replicate in your home aquaria to promote succesful acclimation include extra swimming area and a stable cave/sheltering ledge.
