A beautiful but sensitive anenome. Take great care in selection and acclimation of this one, it needs very good quality water to survive. Supplement with cut pieces of fish or shrimp to ensure good health and growth. Be warned, unlike most other anemones, this one heads for higher ground, so make sure there is nothing in its path you want to keep from being overtaken. |

The Ritteri Anemone (Heteractis magnifica) is sometimes called a Heteractis Magnificent Sea Anemone or a Magnificent Anemone. It belongs to the family named Stichodactylidae. Typically reaching a max size of about 18 inches in diameter, the Ritteri Anemone is aggressive in nature and risky in stamina. It's more active during the daytime and less at night, and will hang out or do best in the upper tank area. According to FishDB current data, captive breeding success is unreported and there are no external signs of sexual differences. Heteractis magnifica in general should have extra bright (5+ watts/gallon) light to thrive. Tank parameters should be maintained with ph level between 8.1 - 8.3, temperature between 77 - 79 degrees fahrenheit, and a salinity between 1.020 - 1.023. Some of the environmental concerns that you should strive to replicate in your home aquaria to promote succesful acclimation include high water quality, a strong water current, and a fluctuating water current.

Unlike most other anemones, Heteractis magnifica seeks higher ground to anchor to. Other anemones either will like where you place them or they will move down with gravity or water currentto find a better spot. Once they feel secure with their footing, they will then try and grow or stretch up closer to the light source or water current. The Ritteri, regardless of the water current, moves directly towards the light in an effort to find a better spot, stinging any competitors it comes in contact with. If it is large enough, it will crawl right up over any sessile invertebrates in its path possibly killing it. To prevent this, place the Ritteri higher in the tank from the on-set.
