The batfish are quite unique in appearance. They grow up to 2 feet tall and glide their oblong bodies gracefully through the water. However, this appeal will lead them into the wrong hands too often. They require a large home with plenty of swimming area and an aquarist willing to deal with their susceptability to ich. |

The Orbiculate Batfish (Platax orbicularis) is sometimes called an Orbic Platax, an Orbic Batfish, or a Round Batfish. It belongs to the family named Ephippididae. Typically reaching a max size of about 22.0 inches in length, the Orbiculate Batfish is passive in nature and moderately hardy in stamina. It's more active during the daytime and less at night, and will hang out across the entire tank. According to FishDB current data, captive breeding success is unreported and there are no external signs of sexual differences. Platax orbicularis should not be housed in a tank less than 200 gallons in size. Tank parameters should be maintained with ph level between 8.1 - 8.4, temperature between 77 - 79 degrees fahrenheit, and a salinity between 1.020 - 1.023. Some of the environmental concerns that you should strive to replicate in your home aquaria to promote succesful acclimation include extra swimming area and high water quality.
