Actually not a crab at all, even though the common name would say other wise. These "crabs" are actually more related to spiders.
These are great substrate mechanics. They basically spend their day "bulldozing" underneath the sand in search of food. The only problem is they are obviously hidden most of the time and unless they are aquired small, their size will dictate the need for a large tank. |

The Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus) belongs to the family named Limulidae. Typically reaching a max size of about 24.0 inches wide, and 12 inches in diameter, the Horseshoe Crab is passive in nature and hardy in stamina. It's more active during the daytime and less at night, and will hang out or do best in the substrate. According to FishDB current data, captive breeding success is unreported and there are no external signs of sexual differences. Limulus polyphemus in general should have standard (3 watts/gallon) light to thrive. Tank parameters should be maintained with ph level between 8.1 - 8.3, temperature between 77 - 79 degrees fahrenheit, and a salinity between 1.020 - 1.023. Some of the environmental concerns that you should strive to replicate in your home aquaria to promote succesful acclimation include extra substrate area and a deep substrate.
