As juveniles these fish are great for community and reef tanks. However, as they grow larger they may become more aggressive and territorial towards more passive tank mates. Best suited for a more aggresive tank setup. Easily confused with the Humbug Damselfish (Dascyllus aruanus). The black tail is the obvious way to differentiate this one. |

The Blacktail Damselfish (Dascyllus melanurus) is sometimes called a Blacktail Dascyllus, a Four Stripe Damselfish, a Blacktail Humbug, or a Striped Damselfish. It belongs to the family named Pomacentridae. Typically reaching a max size of about 3.1 inches in length, the Blacktail Damselfish is aggressive in nature and hardy in stamina. It's more active during the daytime and less at night, and will hang out across the entire tank. According to FishDB current data, captive breeding success is unreported and there are no external signs of sexual differences. Dascyllus melanurus should not be housed in a tank less than 55 gallons in size. Tank parameters should be maintained with ph level between 8.1 - 8.3, temperature between 77 - 79 degrees fahrenheit, and a salinity between 1.020 - 1.023. Some of the environmental concerns that you should strive to replicate in your home aquaria to promote succesful acclimation include plenty of hiding places.

Dascyllus melanurus is a hardy member of a saltwater aquarium. Because of this and its usually low price it is often recommended as a way for novice marine aquarium keepers to gain experience in the hobby. Thirty gallons is typically quoted as the minimum tank size required to permanently house this fish.
It is an aggressive fish, even when compared to many damselfish, and will often harass similarly sized fish. It is also territorial with members of its own species, and with new additions to a tank. This will often make it difficult to add other small fish to an aquarium. It is however reef safe and will not harm invertebrates. Despite its hardy nature care should be taken when placing one with larger predatory fish such as lion fish, and grouper which will may eat it.
