A very attractive specimen, but fairly rare in the trade. Best kept without other similar or smaller size tankmates which would share the same hiding places. If ample hiding places are available, then multiple Blackcaps can be house together in a larger tank. |

The Blackcap Gramma (Gramma melacara) is sometimes called a Blackcap Basslet. It belongs to the family named Grammidae. Typically reaching a max size of about 3.8 inches in length, the Blackcap Gramma is semi-aggressive in nature and moderately hardy in stamina. It's more active during the daytime and less at night, and will hang out across the entire tank. According to FishDB current data, captive breeding success is unreported and there are no external signs of sexual differences. Gramma melacara should not be housed in a tank less than 30 gallons in sizeand in general should have low (2 watts/gallon) light to thrive. Tank parameters should be maintained with ph level between 8.1 - 8.3, temperature between 77 - 79 degrees fahrenheit, and a salinity between 1.020 - 1.023. Some of the environmental concerns that you should strive to replicate in your home aquaria to promote succesful acclimation include plenty of hiding places.
