This eel is very difficult to acclimate to capitivy. In contrast to the behaviors of other eels, the Banded Snake Eel is very docile. You should keep with other passive tankmates, as it may be picked on resulting in a very stressed eel, reducing the likelyhood of survival. This particular species tends to bury itself in deep substrate, as opposed to hiding within the holes of the rockwork. |

The Banded Snake Eel (Myrichthys columbrinus) is sometimes called a Harlequin Snake Eel. Typically reaching a max size of about 34.0 inches in length, the Banded Snake Eel is generally passive in nature and risky in stamina. It's more active during the evening hours or at night and less so during the day, and will hang out or do best in the lower tank area. According to FishDB current data, captive breeding success is unreported and there are no external signs of sexual differences. Myrichthys columbrinus should not be housed in a tank less than 180 gallons in size. Tank parameters should be maintained with ph level between 8.1 - 8.3, temperature between 77 - 79 degrees fahrenheit, and a salinity between 1.020 - 1.023. Some of the environmental concerns that you should strive to replicate in your home aquaria to promote succesful acclimation include extra substrate area, plenty of hiding places, a mixed substrate, a deep substrate, and a stable cave/sheltering ledge.
